What moves you

by scott.tate 28. July 2008 04:14

The word 'move' has many meanings and is intimately tied to many of the connotations of the words 'health' and 'wellness'.  What physically moves me is more often than not, two feet and a heartbeat!  I am making a concerted effort to walk, rollerblade and cycle to as many of my appointments and destinations as possible and when not, I choose public forms of transit.  These choices, I make for total health and total wealth.

The short and long term physical benefits of using our bodies to move us are many and continue to be uncovered as the science of exercise evolves.  Similarly, the economic benefits for myself and our community that stem from these choices are vast and varied.  They range from infusing the local economy that sells and cares for our bicycles and blades, drives our buses, conducts our trains and railways to personal savings in not owning or operating a car less often and even reduces the burden on our health care system.  Further promotion of health occurs through these choices by reducing the burden on our environment by choosing to move in these ways.  Reducing the carbon load on our ecosystem and encouraging my friends, family and neighbours to make similar choices to stay well moves me in yet more ways too.

What is not to be forgotten or dismissed is the way choosing to stay well can make differences in peoples lives.  There are real benefits and rewards to be reaped not only by yourself and your neighbours by making these healthy choices in life.  It is almost impossible to measure the full extent of the ripple effect of choosing to stay well, no matter how you define 'wellness', but we all need to start somewhere, so make your move today.  How are you choosing to stay well?

Make time for a morning meal!

by scott.tate 27. July 2008 00:35

Eat Breakfast and lower your chances of becoming obese, developing heart disease, diabetes, lower your risk for experiencing strokes, intestinal polyps and colon cancer.  However, be wise with your food choices, avoid high fat, sugar and salty foods (ie. most fast food breakfast choices) and opt for real food and lots of fibre to maximize your potential health benefits from making a habit of a healthy breakfast!

Like any healthy habit, forming them requires committing to making changes in your timetable, be realistic and do your math.  It took me less than 15 seconds to make my granola (sweetened with acai) and trail mix (unsalted) with soy milk breakfast this morning and I sat for another 15 minutes to enjoy it and think about my day.  Every morning, eating a healthy breakfast and taking the time to enjoy it, I decrease my risk for all of the above diseases, I ramp up my metabolism and get my brain and body the fuel it needs to work effectively and where possible I eat locally and organically grown products to increase the potential for my community and environment to benefit from my breakfast too.

Find your local farmers market and take advantage of the fresh and delicious berries and fruit in your next breakfast and whether its cereal, oatmeal, fresh whole grain bread or a delicious veggie packed omelette, enjoy that morning meal!

Why Choose to Stay Well?

by scott.tate 16. July 2008 13:28
This may seem like a simple question with an obvious answer, especially considering the alternatives.  However, judging by the increasing and alarming statistics surrounding our mismanaged health, and lost potential for optimal health, it seems like a tougher question at second pass.  The reality is, in today's culture health and wellness; physical, emotional, spiritual or environmental, is not at the core, at least not on paper, in policy or in practice for many.

Our bodies however, search for this Well homeostasis, but as complex and amazing as the human body is, it is simple at its core.  The body does its best to handle what we put in, what we seek to take out and maintain this balance to allow to us continue to give and take from it.  We are making amazing leaps towards optimizing this homeostasis with the help of science and experience, learning that there is much we do that is counter-productive to this balance, and much we can Choose to do to help maintain a healthier balance.

With the reality of today's culture and lifestyle in mind, what does become clear about this question, "Why Choose to Stay Well?", is that we need to bring real value to words like Health, and Wellness.  The evidence is mounting that making lifestyle changes from small to large scale has true value, there is wealth to be earned with health.  People that take better care of their health are more productive, efficient and longer, healthier lived.  You will have to pardon the pun, but improving your bottom-line really can improve your bottom-line, and if this is what is needed to get people moving and making change, Choosing to Stay Well, then I am all for it.

It comes down to motivation and commitment.  Maybe your motivation is that immediate rush that comes from treating yourself right; some exercise, a good meal or a good romp.  Maybe your immediate rush is more mental, your motivation stems from the longer-term feeling of satisfaction when you think about being able to play with your grandchildren... like a child yourself.  Maybe your motivation is that thrill of competition, knowing that you, healthier, fitter, quicker, both mentally and physically have the leg up on your competitors.
Your commitment by Choosing to Stay Well is to commit to making choices and changes.  Creating new habits is not easy no matter how healthy, breaking habits either, so start small.  Find those feelings, tingles, electric charges that your body sends that say "YES... Thank YOU", and keep doing those things.  If you can do these on your own, do them!  Maybe these words are the last things you read on your self-propelled path to being and feeling Well.  Or maybe, like me, you are always interested to learn more, stay on the leading edge of that wave and make the most of our ever evolving understanding of health and wellness.

Just like I have good people and trusted professionals to manage my legal and fiduciary duties, I trust a similar circle of care to manage my health.  My expertise is in exercise medicine and I am building this base in food medicine as well, but the beauty of a mature approach to health is that I leave my ego at the door and actively seek second opinions and new knowledge.  I have trusted Naturopathics Doctors, Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners, Chiropractors, Dieticians, Kinesiologists, Massage Therapists, Dentists and General Medical Practitioners on my health team and work to keep them all on the same page with regards to my health.  My medical community is vast and I have made it my livelihood to keep abreast of the new developments in health and I am reaping the rewards with improved health and a growing appreciation for my wealth in health, and this is what I want to share.

The internet and media today have the potential and do provide us with a wealth of knowledge, but to navigate this maze and produce from it a sound basis to develop a wealth in health is challenging.  It is with the services provided by Choosing to Stay Well and articles like this, that I hope to help people create that wealth in health, "Total Health and Total Wealth" as one friend put it, to allow them to live life to its fullest potential.

In Health,

Scott Tate
